Polysulphone film as an underwater dosimeter for solar ultraviolet-B radiation in tropical latitudes

چکیده
This paper examines the potential of polysulphone film (PSF) as a dosimeter for unweighted solar ultraviolet-B radiation (UVB; 280 to 320 nm) in different seawater conditions in tropical latitudes. PSF's accuracy is determined by water type and depth range. The film may be used over a depth range of 7 m with measurement errors of less than 5 % in oceanic type waters, such as are found around coral atolls and islands. In clear but coloured continental coastal waters the range decreases to 2.2 m. Calibration functions are presented for use of the film both in air (e.g. an intertidal setting) and underwater over the UVB dose range of about 1.5 to 40 kJ m-' A comprehensive analysis of errors arising from the use of PSF, in air and underwater, is given. The film offers a cost-effective and simple technique for studying biological responses to solar UVB radiation in many tropical marine habitats, including intertidal and subtidal coral reefs.

Extending the dynamic range of polysulphone for measuring UV exposures
Polysulphone has been widely used as a dosimeter to quantify personal solar UV exposures to humans during normal daily activities. In summer at sub-tropical and tropical latitudes, the dynamic range for UV exposures allows the use of the polysulphone to measure solar UV over periods of approximately three to six hours. The use of mesh as a filter over the polysulphone has been previously report...
متن کاملField calibrations of a long-term UV dosimeter for aquatic UVB exposures.
Various methodologies using a wide range of measurement systems have been employed previously in order to determine the amount of UV that could be incident upon various aquatic organisms in a number of different aquatic locales. Broadband meters and spectroradiometers have been employed extensively to take underwater measurements. However, these measurement campaigns are limited by the fact tha...
متن کاملAssessment of Ultraviolet Radiation Exposures in Photobiological Experiments
The interfering effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation on the natural function of biological processes is wavelength specific and the UV spectrum must be weighted with the action spectrum for the process. The UV spectral irradiance may be measured with calibrated spectroradiometers. Alternatively, the biologically effective UV may be measured with broadband devices. This paper reviews the techniq...
متن کاملApplicability of the polyphenylene oxide film dosimeter to high UV exposures in aquatic environments.
Previous research has proven that the Poly (2,6-dimethyl-1, 4-phenylene oxide) (PPO) dosimeter is capable of receiving both in-air and underwater UV exposures that are significantly greater than those of the more commonly used polysulphone dosimeter, within a range of accuracy close to what would be expected of dosimetric measurements made in-air provided that the necessary calibrations are com...
متن کاملUltraviolet radiation dosimetry with radiochromic film.
Radiochromic film is tested for its broad-band response to ultraviolet (UV) B (290-320 nm) and A (320 nm400 nm), visible and infrared radiation produced by a solar simulator and examined for dosimetry in ultraviolet radiation. Results show that MD-55-2 radiochromic film in solar and fluorescent light sources responds almost exclusively to broad-band UVA radiation with negligible colouration fro...
